Suzanne Vega, Studio Workshop

The WVC Commercial Music program, in conjunction with Montalvo Arts Center hosted a studio workshop featuring thrice Grammy nominated singer, songwriter and recording artist Suzanne Vega.

Vega discussed a variety of topics including the creative process, artistic collaboration, technology, the music business, entrepreneurship and entertainment law.

Several students presented examples of their own work and received feedback, critique and gracious encouragement from the well-accomplished musician.  Like her lyrics, Vega was understated, insightful, discerning and astute.

This evening’s Montalvo performance is all sold out.

In the following clip Vega tells a story of working with influential composer Philip Glass:

Opening lines to Tom’s Diner:

I am sitting
In the morning
At the diner
On the corner

I am waiting
At the counter
For the man
To pour the coffee

And he fills it
Only halfway
And before
I even argue

He is looking
Out the window
At somebody
Coming in

“It is always
Nice to see you”
Says the man
Behind the counter

To the woman
Who has come in
She is shaking
Her umbrella

And I look
The other way
As they are kissing
Their hellos

I’m pretending
Not to see them
I pour the milk

Awesome talk. Was totally relevant to visual artists as well. She said some interesting things about the creative process, the business of marketing your art. Great!
